In mythology Demeter was a goddess who traveled to the underworld to rescue her daughter Persephone, who had eaten the seeds of a pomegranate and been captured by Hades. On FragranceNet.com, Demeter is a cologne company with some surprising scents – though they don’t offer pomegranate, which would have been a clever tie-in with their name.

They do, however, offer you the unique opportunity to smell like Play-Doh. Yes, you did read correctly. You can order Play-Doh eau de cologne spray, and smell like a freshly opened container of “The Doh”. Would you be brave enough to walk around smelling like a child’s activity product, stirring up nostalgic thoughts everywhere you went?
What about Dirt? The smell of fresh earth could be refreshing, one supposes – but this isn’t called “Earth”, which is all New Age-y and Green sounding. No, this is DIRT. As in, Dirty. Would you put on a cologne called Dirt after you just took a shower?

Then there’s Laundromat. You can, if you wish, smell exactly like a laundromat. But what does the laundromat in question smell like? Dryer sheets? Stale cigarette smoke and angst? Lint-covered quarters and mateless socks?
There must have been a demand for these smells, or else these perfumes would not have been invented – I’m guessing, anyway. At least, I would certainly hope so. Then again, pondering a demand for a cologne that smells like dirt is a bit disturbing in its own unique way, and if one wanted to smell like Play-Doh, couldn’t one dab a little bit behind each ear and save the perfume scientists all the trouble?

It is a bit puzzling that someone with more than a passing knowledge of how chemistry works woke up one morning and said, “Hmm, let’s see – cure cancer, or invent a perfume that smells like a laundromat. Which one shall I choose?” and decided to go work for Demeter.
